THE MEANING OF UNIVERSAL AWARENESS

A rational foundation

1. Universal Awareness: A Summary of the Theory

To begin with, I must explain two important points. The first is about the distinctions between:

  1. our physical being, i.e. our body, including our nervous system
  2. the individual person we are
  3. our self-awareness, i.e. our awareness of being the person we are.

When referring to these components, I use the terms 'Host', 'Person' and 'Soul' respectively.

While the Host is clearly an entity or object, the Person and the Soul are not; they are activities, what the Host does.

Second, the Theory of Universal Awareness represents the universe as one organic, integrated whole: one object engaged in one activity. That is, we consider that any object, entity or attribute that our minds identify is 'a bit of the universe', and any activity that we identify is part of the overall activity of the universe or, more simply, 'something the universe is doing'.

Applying this to the above tripartite division of 'a sentient being' leads to the following conclusions:

  1. The composition and structure of the universe enable it to engage in the activity of 'being a Person' at certain extremely rare and minute material locations in space and time and which the theory terms 'Hosts'. Currently, the only Hosts we know of are humans, and possibly other creatures, on planet Earth, though it seems likely that they exist elsewhere in our universe.
  2. We may add that the structure and composition of the universe enable it to be aware of itself and its activity at these rare locations. Hence the term 'Universal Awareness' (or we might be tempted to say 'Universal Soul').
  3. The death of any Host means that the universe is no longer structured to engage in the activity of being that Person. In other words, when we die, the individual we are aware of being ceases to exist. However, awareness of self is not integral to the individual we are; in a manner of speaking it 'belongs to' the universe. Although, at death, the universe can no longer be aware of itself as this Person, its awareness of itself continues in all other locations.
  4. From this, it may be said that if we are not aware of being the Person we are now (e.g. we die) we are aware of being some other Host, any Host in space-time. If you like, we all share the same Soul.

To assist understanding of the last-mentioned conclusion: the Theory of Universal Awareness accepts the position that there is no objective past, present or future in the space-time universe. These are attributes constructed by the minds of Hosts, each experiencing their personal existence along 'virtual' timeline that is unique to them and that begins with their earliest conscious experience and ends with their last.

Phew! All this is very much 'in a manner of speaking' In fact, you will doubtless have noticed that in conveying the above ideas, I have used some highly convoluted language that may have caused you difficulty understanding what I mean, and I apologise. Also, there are probably many questions you need answers to before you can begin to give any serious consideration to what is being asserted There are two reasons for this. First, the conclusions expressed are the outcome of a step-by-step process of reasoning, and without this they may not make much sense to you. Second, this same process requires you to set aside how your brain and senses habitually represent the world, in favour of radically different ways of thinking. Our language is well suited to our everyday ways of understanding the world, but not these new ways, so it is often a struggle to put these into words.

If you do read one of my books, then things should become much clearer to you. My 2025 book, though only 100 pages long, is quite adequate for this. The earlier books contain more detailed analysis and reasoning, and of the two, the second edition is the more obvious choice.

I intend to elaborate on some of these themes in future posts with a view to understanding their impact on how we experience and conduct our everyday lives.

Note: At present, it's not possible for you to post your comments on my blog directly. But I welcome them via my email address, and I'll only upload them under 'Comments' if that is your wish (and with the usual stipulations about offensiveness, etc.)
